Northern Transvaal Branch

If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people. Thich Nhat Hanh

The Northern Transvaal branch is based in Pretoria. We serve neighbouring areas of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, parts of the North West Province and Gauteng’s East Rand.

Branch membership is approaching 200. We meet monthly at 13:30 in the Art Gallery of the Voortrekker Monument (VTM) on every second Saturday – except January and December. The annual branch activities programme typically includes presentations by authoritative speakers and mid-year symposium. Members receive a monthly newsletter in addition to GSSA’s quarterly journal Familia.

We operate a Genealogy stall at the VTM’s frequent antique markets (held on public holidays) to promote genealogy as a hobby, as well as guiding and informing the public about family research. Useful and exciting excursions are conducted to archival institutions, museums and places of interest. Besides managing projects, such as the digitisation of the 1972 Voters Roll, the branch is active in several projects, such as GSSA’s Archive Tours, the 1820 Settlers awareness project (200 year celebration) and the annual Genealogy and Family Heritage Expo  (presented for the 12th time this year under a new banner of the FAK).

Among our members are several experienced old hands who will gladly assist newcomers. As a branch that is passionate about the study of families and the dynamics of genealogy, we take pride in our support to members through training and research guidance, including the use of modern technology. are welcome to Join Us!
