Natal Midlands Branch

The Natal Midlands Branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa is based in Hilton outside Pietermaritzburg, the capital of Kwa Zulu Natal and the location of the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository.

We meet on first Saturday of every month (except December and January) at 9:00am for 9:30am, at the Hilton Library, Hilton Ave, Hilton. We alternate between speakers, workshops, and outings on all things related to Genealogy.

We hold a Family & Local History Fair on the first Saturday of September at Project Gateway, 4 Burger Street, Pietermaritzburg.

Extensive research resources are available to researchers in our Library. These include many books, registers, maps, and other documents. Upon request the Chairman or a Committee member will open the library for those that are interested.

Our members have a wide range of genealogical interests, ranging from the Byrne Settlers and other British Settlers, 1820 Settlers, the Germen Settlers, the Indentured Indians, and St Helena Island. There is also a keen interest in the Zulu and Boer Wars.

We are fortunate to have members who are specialists in their respective fields, such as Shelagh Spencer on early British settlers to Natal, Dr Krish Moodley on Indian settlers, Dr Mike O’Connor on Irish ancestry, to name a few.
