Dr Terrence Kourie (69), a former specialist surgeon at Life The Glynnwood, died on November 1.

This is after he enjoyed little more than a year of retirement, Kourie, who grew up in Witbank, joined the surgical team at the hospital in 1988 and practised from the medical suites for more than three decades.

His illustrious career kicked off at the Tembisa Hospital in 1979 where he completed his internship. He moved on to the Natalspruit Hospital where he was mentored in his pursuit to specialise in surgery.

He remained at the hospital briefly before entering private practice. Described as a medical professional who was completely invested in the care of his patients, hospital spokesperson Bonnie Whiffler said that he could be found doing his patient rounds before sunrise.

“In his free time, Kourie walked various nature trails near the Kruger National Park,” said Whiffler.

“Practicing medicine and spending time in nature were his great passions.”

Colleague Dr Hennie Rost, who worked with Kourie for 20 years, described him as a man of integrity who spent his life helping others.

“He embodied care, compassion and empathy,” said Rost.

Whiffler said that Kourie’s wisdom, kindness and gentle demeanour will live on in those he interacted with.

“He will remain part of our family and will be deeply missed,’ she said.

A memorial service in his honour will be held on November 22 at 10:30 at Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, Kempton Park.
