The keynote speaker Saturday 16 March 2013 at the Gala Dinner of the GSSA was Dr Janet Du Plooy. I urge you to read her speech and to pay attention to the extremely fine detail – it is apparent that she did a lot of research. I want to congratulate her again for her tour de force with this research. This speech is peppered with such a lot of information that cries out for any researcher who is interested in this aspect of life and how it impacted on his/her family story to follow it up with his/her own deeper research. Although this speech is great on detail, you should remember that she could not go into deeper details as she then would have to write a book.

Read about the Talbot family, who were ennobled in the 15th century as the Earls of Shrewsbury, owned most of Sheffield and rose to become one of England's most influential families under the Tudor dynasty.
The GALWAY CASTLE was built in 1911 by Harland & Wolff (think Titanic!) at Belfast. She had a short but exciting life! She was the last ship to be delivered before the company was taken over by Royal Mail. The following extract is from “Bird of Paradise” by Daphne Saul. Read the fascinating story of José who was a passenger on the Galway Castle. At 07.30 hrs on 12th September 1918 when two days out from Plymouth, she was torpedoed by U-82 and her back was broken. At the time she was carrying about 400 South African walking wounded, 346 passengers and 204 crew members.

My vriend, Adv.

In this edition you will read something about John Robert Dunn – a European who became a Zulu Chief. This is a story on how one can be side tracked, as it were, doing research. It is like reading a Dictionary, you force yourself not to go too far and widely off the track. It is, however, worthwhile.

Another story is about the intersect between modern day DNA and old-fashioned genealogy and how to solve a murder that happened 36 years ago!

Please read Bob Saunders’ introduction to West Gauteng 2016 theme about TIMELINES. This is an exciting new theme for our Branch for 2016. It means in essence that each one of our members who participate will get a chance of telling his or her story and how events [world events, national events, local events or family stories] had an impact on their lives. Each one of us reading this editorial does have a story – even if you have not met your grandfather so to speak! If you agree with this principle, you are definitely in trouble with me as the Editor of our Newsletter – it means that you should write me your story for publication.

The Rand Easter Show by Jack Jordan The show was first held at the Old Wanderers cricket ground in November 1894 by the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society, a society that had formed in March of the same year. The second show was opened by Paul Kruger on 13 March 1895, at a venue called Milner Park, which is today the site of the University of the Witwatersrand’s West Campus. It was held again in 1896 and re-established subsequent to the end of the Anglo Boer War, in 1907. In 1936, the Rand Show was called the Empire Exhibition. In the early days, getting there involved a tram ride to Vrededorp, known as “Fietas”, then a bus from Vrededorp to Milpark. The origin of the name Fietas is lost in the mists of time but is assumed to be a name given by the Malays who were a part of the very cosmopolitan community that occupied Vrededorp before the days of segregation and relocation. One of the first tasks was to collect some heavy-duty paper carry-bags with string handles, not the eco unfriendly plastic of today, these were handed out free for the purpose of storing and carrying the samples and brochures that were lavishly dished out. This included items like sugar rice, condensed milk, cereals, washing powder, soap and many others. As a family you could garner a week’s grocery supply at the show. What halcyon days.

The Agenda For Our Meeting Saturday 18 October 2014. Marnus Steyn, one of our members, will present a short lecture on how to take better photogprahs. Our guest speaker will be Me Julia Wenhold. Her topic would be on the immigrants from Germany.

Miskien moet jy bo-oor klim? Miskien moet jy om loop?
TEMA VIR 2015: â€˜n MUUR BLOKKEER JOU NAVORSING

For many, there will be those lists of resolutions which one by one might fall by the wayside as we go about our daily business. For some there will be those lists “to do”, or “bucket lists” which are meant to keep us focused on achieving certain goals and ambitions, while for others there are just those numerous mountains which somehow need to be scaled.Any of these scenarios of course, can be applied equally to our research as well! And so we will find ourselves following our paths as we plot them or as we find (or make) time to advance our work by delving deeper into the past, or concentrating on trying to make breakthroughs with those problem areas already known to ourselves.

In my soeke na my wortels, het ek 8000 kilometers gery! Dit het verdere belangstelling by my gewek, en so het ek my familie-navorsing begin.
