BREAKING DOWN MY SMITH BRICK WALL

My grandfather John Christian Hardick Smith’s parents are Christian John Smith and Martha Elizabeth Harper.

KONINKLIKES BESOEK SUID-AFRIKJA IN 1947

Dis 1947.

LILLIA SE STORIE

Dogtertjies is dromers.

VIPs in my family tree
Presentation by Richard Y Ford – West Gauteng branch of the Genealogy Society of South Africa 17 August 2019
My research and documentation of family registers from various ancestors to me was undertaken mainly between the years 2000 and 2005. This work resulted in the publication of my book Necessarily the Hero – The Story of Richard Y Ford in 2001. The aim of my research and the publication of this work were mainly to provide a legacy for my children. The latest revision was completed in November 2018........

ALBERT ARTHUR BISSET

If we think about it, we all know people of talent who remain unknown, unproclaimed and unacknowledged all their lives. No doubt you have never heard of Albert Arthur Bisset. I knew him because he was my wife’s father. Born 16th September 1889, he was a descendent of 1820 settler stock, originally the Gardner-Bissets. This means he would have been 130 years old if he were alive.  According to the records in Grahamstown, the Gardner-Bissets were a prominent, respected family which included a magistrate, a judge and senior military persons of rank and standing.

Dit is tans in haar seun se besit. Hy woon in die VSA.

The revamping of the branch libary is reported. It is reported that our members got stuck into our Branch’s library and overhauled it. It is a massive task and so far it necessitated two Saturday’s of hard dedicated work. They worked and also stopped to have something to eat and the chat [I venture a guess what they were chatting about? Probably what to do next!!!]

Naamgewing in vervloë se dae - Johan Lourens.

Read in this edition: This month we have a rather mixed bag of articles which I find very intriguing and fascinating. I trust that you will agree with me. Francois Greeff, all the way from London sent me his article THE REPUBLICS SOUTH OF THE LIMPOPO during 2015 although he wrote it already during 2006. It was only recently that it took on a different meaning especially after Lucas Rinken’s article AN ATTEMPT TO SHOW HISTORICALLY CORRECT PLACE NAMES was published in the March 2017 DIE DELWER/THE DIGGER. Lucas’s article attracted a lot of attention; I do hope that Francois’ article will likewise attract a lot of attention. 2 Following on Francois’ is Hennie Van Aswegen’s B3C8D1E1 JAN DANIEL KRIGE (E-SAGI 747355). I want to congratulate Hennie with his article [FAMILIA Volume 52-2017 at page 53] that was published in FAMILIA. and more.....

WEST GAUTENG’S STORY ABOUT THEIRCEMETERY PROJECT The object of this story is definitely not to show you gangsters headstones in South Africa. We can, however, if we really want to, compile such a list and start off with Demitri Tsafendas, you remember him? He killed Dr H.F. Verwoerd] who is buried in Sterkfontein. Our branch’s leader for the GSSA cemetery project is Giel Nel. He is at the helm for a number of years already. Just a few members of our branch go quite regularly to Sterkfontein to take photographs of the gravestones. Yes, we can do with more members and public who want to help. There are more than 40’000 gravestones to photograph. And more.......

We have on occasion mentioned that we should be exposed to other people’s histories for instance Jewish and Indian stories. Well, here is a story of a survivor of the massacre in Rwanda during 1994. I recall very vividly how a friend and I sat in an ambassador’s office in Pretoria during the latter half of April 1994 and him showing us telex reports and colour photographs of killings in Roman Catholic Churches in Rwanda. And now our next story.

Read the remarkable story of Lucas Rinken with his huge achievement of updating E-SAGI  to 750 000 names on 11 December 2014!  Lucas started 1997 with this database primarily to proof that the late General Christiaan De Wet is related to him and he never quitted and it evolved to this huge compilation of 750 000 names.

One of our West Gauteng Members of the GSSA, General [retired] Colin Steyn gave me a photocopy of this article that was published in SERVAMUS Community-based Safety & Security Magazine December 2016. After reading it, I decided that it is worthwhile to publish it in our magazine DIE DELWER/THE DIGGER.Daan Pieterse van ons Wes Gauteng Tak en vriende was met vakansie in Magoebaskloof en het heerlik rondgery en ‘n goeie ervaring beleef.
