Johannesburg Branch Meetings Calendar for 2020

21st MARCH 2020

Book-in-a-Box Project – Desré Sjöberg: Learn how to make a small book/album for photos, letters as a keepsake or gift. Bring scissors, pens, pencils, ruler and rubber, a nice box (size A4 or A5) (CNA or any stationers) to contain a book plus one or two family

“heirlooms” or memento’s like a brooch, a medal, old letters, etc. together with some photos and/or postcards/letters/documents. Perfect for that milestone birthday or as a special gift for a son, daughter or grandchild. We’ll provide cellotape, photo corners, guillotines, cutting mats, paper and board. Venue: 28 Road No.5, Victory Park.

18th APRIL 2020

“My Family Tree”:

Members are invited to give a short talk on one family tree (10 minutes). Fellow researchers will assist in problem  solving Q & A.

16th MAY 2020 

Talk on Current Resources:

For the first part of the meeting Natalie da Silva will talk about her favourite websites, some helpful free genealogical sites plus new resources on www.familysearch.org. Includes a printed list to take home and try out for yourselves. Part two of this meeting will be spent in preparation for the meeting in June.

23rd JUNE 2020

MIDWEEK National Archives visit (PTA) We will spend the day at the Pretoria Archives. Bring a digital camera. If you are interested in sharing transport, leave your details in the Branch Visitor’s book.

18th JULY 2020

Round Table Workshop: Venue TBA Bring your research (particularly one with a stumbling block), your notes and/or laptop if possible. Internet will be available.

15th AUGUST 2020

Talk on Tertiary Research Resources: Natalie da Silva Thinking “outside-of-the-box” by using an old house address, an old farm name, military medals or unusual sports. This Talk suggests some other ways to skin the cat when looking for information  in your family tree.

19th SEPTEMBER 2020 - LDS Visit 

This visit to the Family History Centre is primarily to show you the ropes in using this fantastic source of genealogical information. Elder Peck will be our host. Meet at 8.30 am at 7 Jubilee Road, Parktown.

17th OCTOBER 2020

Cemetery Recording - Venue TBA

We’d like to give back to the Society. Pack a lunch box and get busy recording  headstone information  as a way of preserving it for all time. Information pack will be sent out closer to the time.

21st NOVEMBER 2020

Year End Celebration / Show and Tell Bring a special document or heirloom and tell us about it. PRIZES PRIZES PRIZES.
