The Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) that was established in 1964 has twelve branches of which eleven are land based. One is an electronic branch catering for members worldwide, via the internet. Each branch arranges its own activities and meets all year round.
Most of our branches meet monthly. The annual branch activities programme typically includes presentations by authoritative speakers, training sessions for beginners and advanced members, and guided outings to places of interest. Members also receive the  GSSA’s quarterly journal Familia.
We promote and facilitate
We promote and facilitate interest and research in genealogy and family history to existing members, to the genealogy hobbyist and to members of the public who may be interested in genealogy and/or family history. We promote general understanding of Genealogy and its value.
We provide:
  • A wide range of educational courses
  • Each branch has a well-stocked library
  • A list of products for sale
  • Research programmes and services for the general benefit of GSSA branches and members
  • We encourage and develop links with Family History  Societies & the National Archives
 
Each branch arranges its own programme for the year that often includes:
  • Guest speakers          
  • Outings to history societies i.e. Family Search & the National Archives
  • Training on the various platforms
  • Assistance in product development

Membership fees for 2021 are as follows:
The annual fees entitles you belong to the GSSA National AND a home branch. In addition, you receive the quarterly publication Familia depending on your option below:

Branches might levy a fee on top of these fees.
 
 
Upon joining you will be allocated to a branch of your choice, e.g. Johannesburg Branch, Vaal Triangle Branch, Western Cape Branch, etc. Besides the 12 land based  branches, you could join the virtual branch called eGSSA- a web based branch.
In some instances the various branches levy an additional mandatory fee for their newsletter which differs from branch to branch.

  • Download the relevant application form above, decide on which branch suits you and pay the applicable fees. Send your completed form to the address on You will be notified via email of your membership.
  • To join via the eGSSA branch, visit their membership page and follow the instructions. The fee of the eGSSA consists of three elements, i.e. membership of the national GSSA; membership of the virtual branch eGSSA and as an optional member of a land based branch, too.
